Short answer: to drive passengers with Uber in Brisbane you need to be 20 or older, hold a full Australian licence for at least 12 months, pass Uber's background check, get a Queensland driver authorisation from TMR, have an ABN, and drive a car that meets Uber's rules. Uber Eats delivery has fewer steps.
1. What Uber asks for (rideshare)
| Requirement | Brisbane / Queensland |
|---|---|
| Minimum age | 20 years |
| Licence | Full driver licence; you must have held an Australian licence for at least 12 months |
| Background check | Done by Uber after you start signing up |
| Insurance | You must be listed as a driver on the car's insurance |
| Business | ABN and GST registration to use the driver app |
| Training | Uber's driver safety education (about 30 minutes) |
2. Queensland driver authorisation (DA)
Every rideshare driver in Queensland needs a booked hire driver authorisation from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The steps:
- Do a commercial-standard medical check (take TMR form QF3712 to your doctor).
- Apply to TMR online or in person with the medical report and the fee.
- Wait for approval. Uber says it usually takes 2 to 3 weeks.
- Upload the authorisation to your Uber driver profile.
To be eligible, TMR asks that you hold a current Australian open licence, have held a licence (Australian or overseas) for at least 3 years in total and one licence for at least 1 year in a row, and have the right to work in Australia.
3. What the car needs
- UberX: 4 doors, room for 4 to 7 passengers, no more than 15 years old, registered in Queensland with CTP insurance, and a passed inspection.
- UberXL: SUV or people mover for 6 to 7 passengers.
- Uber Comfort: made in the last 7 years and on Uber's model list.
- A 5-star ANCAP rating (or an Uber exemption).
- Each car used on the app also needs a Queensland booked hire service licence and the right CTP class.
Renting from QuickVan? Rideshare is allowed in our cars and 2WD SUVs (not in vans, campervans or 4x4s). Tell us you will drive Uber when you book, and we will help you with the car's paperwork and pick a car that fits Uber's rules.
4. Uber Eats and delivery
Delivery has a lower bar: Uber says you can start from 18. For delivering by car, Uber asks for a full Australian licence, a background check, a car registered in Queensland with CTP, and third-party property (or comprehensive) insurance. You do not need a driver authorisation to carry food. Delivering by scooter needs a motorcycle licence.
5. Typical order and timing
- Start the Uber sign-up and background check (week 1).
- Medical and TMR driver authorisation (weeks 1 to 3).
- ABN and GST registration (can be done online the same day).
- Rent the car and add it to your Uber account (pick up at our Albion depot when your authorisation arrives).
While you wait for the authorisation you can start with Uber Eats if you already hold a full Australian licence.
Uber and the Queensland government change these rules from time to time. Check the official pages below before you start.
