Most new drivers lose time and money doing things in the wrong order. Here is the order that works in Brisbane.
Step 1: Check you qualify
To carry passengers you must be 20 or older and have held an Australian licence for at least 12 months. If you only have an overseas licence, read driving Uber with an overseas licence first. All requirements are in our Uber requirements checklist.
Step 2: Start the Uber sign-up
Create your driver account in the Uber app and start the background check. It runs while you do the next steps.
Step 3: Medical and driver authorisation
Book a commercial-standard medical with your doctor (bring TMR form QF3712), then apply to TMR for the booked hire driver authorisation. Uber says approval usually takes 2 to 3 weeks. This is the slowest step, so do it early.
Step 4: ABN and GST
Register an ABN and for GST online. Uber needs both before you can go online.
Step 5: Book the car for the day your authorisation arrives
Do not start paying rent while you wait. Book online with a pickup date after your authorisation is approved, and tell us you will drive Uber so we give you a suitable 4-door car. If you will drive 8 weeks or more, the first 2 weeks are half price (from $80/week).
Step 6: Add the car in the Uber app and go online
Upload the car's documents in your Uber profile. We help you with the paperwork for the car at pickup.
While you wait
If you already hold a full Australian licence, you can deliver for Uber Eats in the meantime. A scooter from $110/week (motorcycle licence needed) or a small car keeps costs low.
